The idea of local pride and celebrating local businesses is nothing new, but it seems to have grown in recent years. Or maybe I’m just now realizing how great local businesses are. In honor of this month’s Local Faves issue, I want to focus on my favorites in the food category.
I should mention that these businesses did not sponsor this post; these items truly are my favorites. And I definitely would recommend all of you to try these.
1. Deli Ohio’s Ham Apple Brie and sea salt chocolate chip cookies.
Whether it’s for lunch or dinner, I love this sandwich. I’m not a fan of apples at all—unless they’re in an apple pie—but this sandwich makes me like apples. And don’t even get me started on the amazing glaze they put on this sandwich. Delicious! It’s the perfect blend of tastes, and unlike other sandwiches, it’s filling enough to have for dinner (along with the side of chips and pickle, of course).
Add a sea salt chocolate chip cookie, and you’re set. I tried one on a whim, fearing that the sea salt would be too much. But I was pleasantly surprised. It’s hard for me to go to Deli Ohio now without adding a cookie to my meal.
I love the fact that everything I get from Deli Ohio is made fresh daily. It tastes great because it’s fresh, and that will keep me coming back for more.
2. Thatsa Wrapp’s Strawberry Thriller wrap and chips & dip.
I love wraps A LOT! I’d even say that they’re my favorite food. The only problem is that they’re usually sold by themselves without an appetizing side. Luckily, I found Thatsa Wrapp. I tried the Strawberry Thriller my first time there, and I’ve been hooked ever since. With fresh strawberries, feta cheese, grilled chicken, greens, glazed walnuts and basil vinaigrette, it’s packed full and oh so good!
And on top of that, I added homemade chips and dip and I couldn’t believe how good the dip was. I was told that it would become my favorite chips and dip, but I was dubious. Let’s just say it’s hard to order a wrap without getting the chips and dip.
3. George’s Lounge’s The Big Onesto burger.
I never would’ve thought that a burger would taste better with an egg on top, but it does. George’s Lounge knows what it’s doing when it comes to burgers. When I go out to dinner, I often will get a burger. I’ve had my fair share of burgers from many different restaurants. But I must say that The Big Onesto is the best burger I’ve ever had. George’s always makes its burgers so juicy. And the pretzel bun is the perfect added touch.
4. Hazel & Rye Artisan Baking Co.’s lemon macaroons.
In the office one day, we taste tested some macaroons from Hazel & Rye. We tried the chocolate, vanilla, salted caramel and lemon flavors. I have a tendency to love lemon-flavored desserts, but sometimes they are too strong. Other times, they’re not strong enough. But Hazel & Rye mastered the lemon flavor in its macaroons. They’re light and creamy and just the right amount of sweet to be the perfect treat.
5. Carpe Diem’s PB&J smoothie.
When I heard about a peanut butter and jelly smoothie, I thought it wouldn’t be very good. Who would want a sandwich in smoothie form? But I tried it anyways, and now it’s one of my favorite smoothies. It tastes just like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, only creamier. Imagine the taste of peanut butter and jelly in a smooth, creamy texture. Surprisingly delicious!
6. Caroline’s Cupcakes’ chocolate covered strawberry cupcakes.
I have a big sweet tooth, so cupcakes are a must on my list of favorites. I enjoy a gourmet cupcake just like everyone else, but I like it even more when it’s easy to eat. Caroline’s Cupcakes somehow does it all. It makes tasty cakes and tops them with the perfect icing while still being able to eat without a plate. I love many of the flavors offered, but my favorite is the chocolate covered strawberry. It’s perfect!
