WHAT IS YOUR MISSION?

The mission of Kids 4 K-9s is to keep police K-9s safe by purchasing bulletproof vests for the dogs. Vests cost $725 each. The current goal of the organization is to raise more than $10,000 to outfit area police dogs with bulletproof vests, as well as to help defray cost of purchasing and training K-9s to keep them safe. Kids 4 K-9s has donated $2,300 to the Louisville Police Department to purchase Havoc, a police K-9 drug dog, and has donated funds to the Canton Police K-9 Association to purchase bulletproof vests for the police K-9s and a video camera that can record what the dog sees, training materials, and more.

Members also do community work, such as working at the K-9 Training Center or weeding, planting flowers and mulching at a K-9 cemetery. They have volunteered at the Fairhope United Methodist Church community dinner, collected items for our troops and made more than 300 cards to send to the troops this past Christmas, in addition to sending packages and cards to burn victims and cancer patients.

HOW DO YOU RAISE MONEY?

Kids 4 K-9s holds fundraisers, including bowl-a-thons, roller-skating parties and charity nights at local restaurants. The group sells birdhouses, dog-treat containers, candy and baked items. Students have worked cleaning tables at an area pizza shop and have placed donation jars at local businesses and dog shows.

HOW DID IT GET STARTED?

Students Samantha Juskiw and Paige Hoffman started the group after watching a K-9 demo in July 2009. The girls asked the police officers how their dogs stay safe without any protection on. The idea began to grow then, and now the groups includes about 25 students from the Stark County area (grades kindergarten through 12). Kids 4 K-9s has raised more than $6,000 to date. The money is deposited through the Louisville Community Foundation, a 501c3 organization.

WHAT DO YOU NEED MOST?

We need monetary donations to purchase more vests and training materials and to help departments purchase police K-9s.
