Jess vs. living the LUXE life

LUXE is unlike any publication in our community: An annual high-end collection of the finest businesses that serve Stark County, captured inside a beautifully photographed book, and showcased on a companion website.

LUXE Lookbook is a fine salute to local business, if we do say so ourselves (and we do). I’m not generally one to toot my own horn (or at least I try not to). And I think all of our readers know that the team that puts together About magazine each month is a hardworking bunch. What you may not know is that while About is at the tippity top of our list of things to knock out of the park for you 12 times a year, we actually have a few other publications of which we are equally proud.

One of those—LUXE Lookbook—hit the streets last month.

LUXE is unlike any publication in our community: An annual high-end collection of the finest businesses that serve Stark County, captured inside a beautifully photographed book, and showcased on a companion website.

If you read “The Jess Files” last month, you know that I am a—let’s just say—vigilant defender of our community. And perhaps I’m a tad overzealous, sure, but when you believe in the community you serve, you have to believe in the foundation of that community. I believe that foundation is in small business, in nurturing an entrepreneurial streak, in creative business prowess. All of the above and more are well represented in LUXE. Read on for a sneak peek of Volume II of LUXE, featuring the best local, unique and creative businesses our community has to offer.

ARTS, CULTURE & EDUCATION

Two exceptional yet distinctive museums—not just by local standards—are included inside LUXE: The Canton Museum of Art, with a world-class permanent collection (I’m especially fond of the watercolors!) and creative exhibitions, and Massillon Museum, infusing history with art around every corner, and offering a wide range of eclectic programming to the community at large. On the performance side, you’ll see the historic Canton Palace Theatre, which hosts more than 300 performances and screenings annually for more than 100,000 visitors, and Players Guild Theatre, providing Broadway in our own backyard with an annual season of shows to entertain all audiences. Then there is the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography, a spectacular gallery and event space with blue chip photograhy and local exhibitions alike, a true gem that stacks up against photography galleries coast to coast. The Arts & Culture section is rounded out by our very own county arts council, ArtsinStark. As of this printing, we don’t know yet if it has succeeded in meeting its annual campaign goal for the 11th year, allowing it to meet its mission of creating new jobs, healthier communities and smarter kids. Fingers crossed! And speaking of smarter kids, Canton Country Day School represents some of the most unique and engaging curriculum for the next generation, truly delivering on the promise to awaken your student’s excitement to learn.

FOOD, DINING & LIBATIONS

There is so much to enjoy in local food and drink! Local craft brewing has hit critical mass in Canton, and both The Canton Brewing Company (love the new burgers) and Royal Docks Brewing Co. (dreaming of the scotch egg flatbread) have come into their own with finely tuned beers and an offering of delectable dishes to tease your palette. And I’m hoping to have an upcoming occasion for which to engage the master cakery designers at All Occasions Bakery. Until then, I’ll have to settle for its delightful cupcakes. Carpe Diem Coffee Shop has been a longtime favorite of mine—they’ll even concoct something on the spot for you depending on what you have a hankering for! Between Gervasi Vineyard, not only the most exquisite place to dine for us locals, but one of the premier tourism attractions in the region, and M Bar, Canton’s premier martini bar, there is no shortage of stylish wines and dines to explore. And if you’re not sure where to go next, call Barb Abbott at Canton Food Tours. She’ll set you straight with a culinary adventure.

BOUTIQUES & SHOPPING

Where to start? Charming, stylish and bespoke shopping awaits you here. Laura of Pembroke offers fashion and home decor in one, including bags and accessories from Kate Spade, my very favorite. Jülz by Alan Rodriguez has cases and cases of custom jewelry in gems, druzies, metals and finishes every color of the rainbow (hint, hint, husband). The designs at Paper Twigs are gorgeous and always have a touch of whimsy—in both paper and flowers. Cain Motors has the best of both BMW and Toyota models, and it has been backing it up with top notch customer service for 35 years. And the newest of the group is Print & Press Shop & Studios (disclaimer, it’s mine!) where we have tees from Little Chicago Clothing Co., paper goods from Letterpress Jess, and more. Pine Cone Gift Shoppe has a little bit of everything—interior decorating services, home furnishings, flowers and gifts, and more!

BEAUTY, HEALTH & WELLNESS

Being the best you you can be is the goal of this group of professionals. From a get-fit perspective, the trainers at My FitLife Personal Training can get you in shape with personalized fitness plans. And Stark County’s premier hot and power yoga studio, Yoga Strong, has expanded to a second location and concept with Barre Fly. Aerial yoga? Yes, please, but somebody better be ready to catch me. The medical professionals at Skin Care Solutions can help you age beautifully and look as young as you feel. Dr. Sherock and Co. at Your Best Kept Secret Aesthetics will help you enhance your natural beauty from the inside out. SG Studio 103 offers a lash lounge and beauty bar where you are all but guaranteed to walk away looking fab. And look no further to find the best megawatt smile in town—Dr. Farah at the Center for Advanced Periodontal & Implant Care is ready for your consultation.

HOME & GARDEN

Who better to build a pool in your backyard than the guys at Family Fun Pools, who have designed and created water parks around the world in any shape and size you can imagine? Lumen Nation has you covered with the latest in lighting trends and Johannings cabinetry will transform your kitchen, bath or closets. The showroom at Morris Flooring & Design will have you dreaming of a total home remodel—its selection of custom tile is unlike any other. Olde Wood Limited offers the largest supply of wide plank and reclaimed flooring and building materials around, bringing rustic charm with modern finishes to any home or business. Between Rice’s Landscaping (exceptional design, planting and maintenance) and Willaman Designs (amazing custom hardscapes and concrete work), you’ll have the nicest yard and patio—a total outdoor living space—in town. It makes my heart hurt just talking about this: Disaster struck for one of our LUXE brands in April … James and Debi Marshall’s extraordinary collection of architectural salvage, reclaimed finds, repurposed treasures and antiques burned in a terrible fire. They are hoping to reopen Marshall’s Antique Warehouse soon. Stay tuned to our website for more details.

BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL SERVICE

When it comes to your professional needs, having the best consultant in the business is the only way to go. Between DeHoff Realtor Ashley Bettis of On Pointe Real Estate and the entire team of Realtors at DeHoff Realtors, you’re assured you have the best team working for you when it comes to selling or buying your dream home. Attorney Brian Zimmerman of BZimmerman Law can handle any legal issues you encounter, from personal injury and medical malpractice to employment, retirement and probate issues.
