Life in New York City is “a complete rush,” says Ashley Spencer, the 2003 Jackson High School grad starring on Broadway in “Hairspray.”

“The pace is so fast,” she says. “I feel like I’m surrounded by concrete all the time and mobs of people. You really have to adjust. You can’t get in the car and drive to the grocery; you have to carry everything back home. But it’s fun all the same.”

Since last July, Spencer has been playing blond bad girl Amber Von Tussle in the dance-filled musical.

Many Stark Countians have come to see her in “Hairspray,” including a large group of chorus members from Jackson High.

“They were all very inspired, kind of in awe,” she says about their visit.

Backstage at “Hairspray,” she has met some mega-celebrities.

“Tom Cruise and Katie and Suri came to the show, and it was a huge deal,” she says. “I met them… They sent us a bouquet of flowers and a tub of candy. We were all very impressed.”

Other backstage visitors have included Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony.

“J Lo was like eight months pregnant — and in four-inch heels!”

Spencer is performing in “Hairspray” through October. Stop at the stage door and say hello.
