26 runners for 26 miles
More than 6,000 registered participants are expected for the inaugural Canton Marathon on June 17. More than 500 already have signed up to run all 26.2 miles. We asked 26 of those runners to tell us about themselves— and why they chose to run the marathon in Canton. Be prepared to be inspired.
Residence: Meyers Lake
Occupation: Hairstylist, Headliners Salon & Day Spa.
How long have you been running? Since junior high — I’ve always liked it. Five years ago, I was hit by a car while jogging and sustained a broken femur, a cracked pelvis, a broken tailbone and a laceration on my ankle. My orthopedic surgeon told me at the time that I may never run again. He installed a 12-inch titanium rod in my leg, which I still have today. I began running again 8 months after the accident. Everyone has a passion in life, and running is mine.
What’s the farthest distance you’ve ever run? 13.1 miles (half marathon). In 2010, I ran the Stomp the Grape event at Maize Valley Winery in Hartville and was hooked.
Do you have a pre-race and/or post-race routine? I always eat pasta the night before a race and peanut butter right before the race. I go to bed early and get a good night sleep.
Do you listen to music while you run? I have a small walkman that you can program radio stations. I love to flip around from rock, to pop, to country whenever. It keeps me moving.
What made you sign up for the Canton Marathon? First, it is on my “bucket list” and second, I don’t have to sleep at a hotel the night before. I sleep much better in my own bed, plus I am a homebody!
Are you following a specific running program? Yes, following the Canton Marathon regiment. I joined the Canton Marathon Running Club in September to receive proper training and avoid any potential injuries.
Where’s your favorite place to run in Stark County? Monument Park.
What is your motivation? I am definitely a morning person. There is nothing I enjoy more than getting up before the sun comes up and lacing up my shoes, hitting the pavement, and watching the sun come up. It is fantastic, my favorite part of the day and it is mine.
What kind of shoes do you wear? Nike. Vomero, most cushioned. I try to buy two pairs at a time and alternate them.
