HAVE A BURNING QUESTION? ASK ABOUT’S RESIDENT SLEUTH ABOUT … WELL, JUST ABOUT ANYTHING!
Q: Todd, what is better for you: 30 minutes of exercise or 30 minutes of sleep?
A: Well, if this ain’t a chicken-or-the-egg question, and the definition of “better” varies from person to person. It really depends on the person you ask. Sleep doctors will tell you how important rest is; physical therapists will harp on the benefits of activity. And they’re both right.
Let’s take sleep first. The benefits of sleep cannot be refuted, and if you’re tired, who is working out then? When you’re tired, your body produces leptin, a hormone that can lead to overeating. If you’re getting a solid eight hours of sleep, then the extra 30 minutes is just you being lazy. Let’s call that what it is.
For the rest of us stuck in that six-to-seven-hour sleep window, we would be better off with the rest.
However, if you’re getting the proper rest, chances are your body’s metabolism doesn’t look like a crab running in the sand. Then exercise is important.
Here’s another solution: How about alternating? Exercise for 30 minutes on Monday. Nap for 30 on Tuesday and alternate.
Q: Do the highway message boards that update with the number of traffic fatalities include only those fatal accidents from the highways in Ohio?
A: No. Those numbers include all fatal accidents that have taken place on all roads in Ohio, regardless of whether they are highways, according to Ohio Highway Patrol Lt. Craig Cvetan. When we went to press, the number of fatal accidents in Ohio was 637, with 691 fatalities. Last year’s total was 919 fatal accidents with 1,008 fatalities.
Q: I am a single man who has been dating for more than eight years trying to find Mrs. Right. What is it that women want?
A: OK, hopefully you’re looking for Miss Right as you date; otherwise, this is a question for a Jerry Springer show. What is it that women want? That’s a simple answer, I believe. They want what men do, as many books will tell you. Respect. That’s it. It’s a two-way street. They want to respect a mate, and have a mate respect them in return. Everything else will fall into place.
