Ben Shankel and Brandi Burkhart met in high school. They became friends in biology class, and he asked her to go to fall homecoming with him their junior year. They started dating October 7, 2006, and remained a couple through the rest of high school.

They went to college four hours away from each other and tried to maintain a long-distance relationship. It had its ups and downs. But after four long years, they moved back to their hometown and continued their relationship.

On December 14, 2013, they were  getting dressed up for a work holiday party. Beforehand, Ben asked Brandi to go for a walk with him in the park across the street from their home because a fresh snowfall had just blanketed the ground, and it was so beautiful. He walked her to a bridge where the scenery was breathtaking and got down on one knee to pop the question. She immediately said yes.

After a 16-month engagement, they got married April 11, 2015, at Center Church of the Brethren in Louisville. The weather was perfect—sunny and warm. Everything was decorated in shades of coral and mint with a lovebird theme. They had their reception at Elm Ridge Party Center in Canal Fulton. The food was delicious, and their cake from All Occasions Bakery was absolutely gorgeous. Their favorite part of the night was dancing with family and friends. The DJ Crew did an excellent job—the dance floor never was empty. It was a truly perfect day.
