Winner: Strip steak at Baker’s Café 33
Honorable mention: Center-cut USDA prime beef at Sylvester’s North End Grille
Want a great steak? Go to Baker’s.
For decades, the moist and full-of-flavor taste of steaks at Baker’s Café 33, along with their melts-in-the-mouth buttery texture, have made the Canton restaurant a go-to place for the classic meat-and-potatoes entree.
Quality cuts of beef are seasoned in-house and prepared to a consistent tenderness in an old-school broiler by chef Jeff Hendershot, who has been cooking at Baker’s for 32 years, the last 17 as owner with his wife, Leona “Midge” Hendershot.
Although Hendershot says he also serves a slew of flavorful rib-eyes and filets from the restaurant’s charming menu chalkboard, the succulent strip steak is a favorite order.
Pair the juicy meat with a potato variety—baked, fried or hash-browned—or substitute some other yummy side dish. Add in a cool iceburg lettuce salad, perhaps topped with croutons and a chunky bleu-cheese dressing, for a bit of crispness that will offer a delightful contrast to the warm, fresh-baked bread.
The strip is offered at $21.95 for the 10-ounce and $26.95 for the 16-ounce variety. Portions are generous. Stay small if you want to save room for dessert—try the peanut butter pie with a dollop of whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Or go large if you want a reason to remember the meal with a tasty midnight steak snack.
