Dr. Steven M. KellyDr. Steven M. Kelly, a general surgeon, is driven in life by a pair of passions—family and career.
“It’s a continuous evolution, trying to balance my work, which I’m very passionate about, with the activities of my kids, for which I’m equally passionate.”
Kelly and his wife of 24 years, Staci (Johnson) Kelly, have three children: Matthew, 19; Hannah, 18; and Adam, 14. In their younger years, Kelly coached teams on which his offspring played. More recently, he has spent time watching their activities and working out himself at the gym.
On the job, the 48-year-old doctor is with Canton General Surgery Associates, concentrating on gall bladder surgery, colon and breast cancer cases and “the bread and butter” of general surgery—hernia, appendicitis and bowel obstructive operations. He claims no singular credit.
“Surgery is a team effort. I would not be very successful without everyone on my team.”
Kelly serves as both trauma medical director and general surgery medical director at Aultman Hospital.
“I help coordinate the clinical care in both those areas,” he said, “and serve as liaison between the physicians and the administration at the hospital.”
A professional goal of his is to help others at Aultman guide the hospital’s growth into a “regional medical presence.”
Still, Kelly’s focus never wanders from keeping grateful eyes on the local medical scene.
“As a community, we are very blessed to have great medical care, great medical facilities and talented health providers,” he said.
“It’s something we should not take for granted.”
