Here are your Local Faves in the Food & Dining category. Did your favorites make the list?

Brewery:

Royal Docks Brewing Co.
7162 Fulton Dr., Canton, 330-353-9103, royaldocksbrewing.com
Runner-up: Canton Brewing Company

Royal Docks Brewing Company has brought some English flavor to Jackson Township. The brewpub serves a variety of IPAs, porters and ales, warning that the menu is subject to change without notice. Nestled in the Marketplace at Nobles Pond, the owners’ goal was to emulate the feel of the pubs they loved frequenting during a several-year stint in Britain. The brewing company serves small plates, such as artisan bread and loaded fries, and some English favorites—there’s a whole section of the menu dedicated to “bangers on a bun.” (That’s sausages, in Stark County-speak.) You even can buy kombucha—a fermented tea beverage—in the taproom. And on Tuesday nights, there’s swing dancing. —Alison Matas

Mediterranean cuisine:

Desert Inn
204 12th St. NW, Canton, 330-456-1766, desertinncanton.com

The Desert Inn serves family style food with an Arabic flare. Try humus, baba ganoush, grape leaves, tabouleh, kibbee or an arabic egg roll as an appetizer. Add lamb, beef, chicken or seafood entrees. Finish with a decadent dessert—baklava, a sundae or parfait. John Shaheen Sr. started with a friendly bar—Desert Inn Restaurant Lounge—on Cherry Avenue. Shaheen later opened the Desert Inn on 12th Street NW. His son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Tina Shaheen, rebuilt the restaurant at 204 12th Street NW in 2006 and continue to operate it at that location. Their sons, Joe as a bartender and Markos as a chef, add their skills in the family business. And it is a family style business, starting with the serving style. Family portions, served on a large tray in the center of the table, include Grecian salad, garlic toast, roasted potatoes and Syrian rice. Dinners are priced per person. —Gary Brown

Sometimes, you don’t want to have to decide between cereal and french toast. Lucky for you, Twisted Citrus in North Canton won’t make you. Their brunch menu includes crunchberry french toast, which is Texas toast rolled in berry cereal and topped with a fruit compote of your choice and sweetened whipped cream. Other indulgent—and equally creative—options include banana split cakes, cinnamon roll cakes and something called funky drunky monkey cakes, where banana pecan pancakes are topped with rum praline sauce and sliced bananas. Yes, please. Not feeling dessert for brunch? Savory choices on the multi-page menu are breakfast nachos, three-egg omelets, pancake tacos and huevos rancheros. Twisted Citrus prides itself on sauteing its fresh veggies to order, making its sausage into patties by hand, and serving fruit compotes instead of syrups.—Alison Matas

Family restaurant:

Tozzi’s on 12th
4210 12th St. NW, Canton, 330-477-7515, tozzison12th.com
Runner-up: Pete’s Restaurant

Tozzi’s on 12th is a family restaurant in more ways than one. Not only is it a great place for families to break bread, the place is a fourth-generation eatery with century-old roots in the tiny village of Magnolia in the southeastern area of Stark County. The restaurant is in Canton Township near Meyers Lake. Eight years ago, Tozzi’s on 12th took over what was formerly the Four Winds Restaurant. Michael Tozzi, with more than 40 years of kitchen experience, and the staff at Tozzi’s on 12th pride themselves on “a unique blend of old-world Italian family recipes” and modern culinary style. The dinner menu features steaks, seafood and an assortment of pastas and a children’s menu for smaller appetites. The original Tozzi’s was opened in Magnolia in 1914 by Italian immigrant Luigi Tozzi. The restaurant evolved through the years, but a fire closed the place in 2011. It was remodeled and opened again in 2015. —Tim Botos

Seafood:

Bender’s Tavern
137 Court Ave. SW, Canton, 330-453-8424, bendersrestaurant.com
Runner-up: Tozzi’s on 12th

If you ever have been to Bender’s Tavern, one of Stark County’s oldest restaurants, you know there aren’t many—perhaps any—places around with fresher seafood. Two, and some times three, times a week Bender’s receives a direct shipment of seafood from Boston to sell in its historic downtown Canton restaurant. The baked eastern halibut on your plate Wednesday night was fished out of the Atlantic the same week. Bender’s also gets its oysters, lobster, sea scallops and Atlantic cod, among many others, fresh a few times a week, as well. They didn’t all arrive by plane, either. Shipping methods are so good that Bender’s can place an order in the morning and by that afternoon, it is on a truck heading to Canton. Hard time deciding? You can’t go wrong with the lobster or sea scallops. Each is done to perfection. —Todd Porter

Appetizer or small plates:

Grapes in a Glass
575 Market Ave. N, Canton, 330-453-WINE, 50shadesofvine.com
Runner-up: Table Six Kitchen + Bar

In April, this casual downtown wine bar, now in its third year, added a small-plates menu to complement its lineup of about 70 wines available by the glass (plus craft beers and cocktails). One favorite is the charcuterie board, a savory collection of meats, cheeses, almonds, pickles and spicy mustard and apricot jam, served with bread. Other temptations include a skewer of marinated grilled shrimp; bruschetta; marinated olive medley; a green salad with bacon, pears and bleu cheese; and a trio of sliders (hamburger, grilled chicken, ham and Swiss), plus specials. Chef David Holland, who created the menu, works wonders in a tiny kitchen. —Dan Kane
