Wylde-Vine-PolaroidThe band formally known as Promise Me Scarlet is at its pivotal left turn.

What began as alternative has now become power pop/country.

The band led by Canton’s Kenny Bauer is now called Wylde Vine.

“The label hated Promise Me Scarlet,” Bauer said.

What’s interesting, however, is what happens to the recently released full-length album, “Bring You Back.”

“We’re proud of the album,” Bauer said. “But we will probably only end up pushing a few songs.”

Which makes sense, since the first half of the album consists of songs the group has been hanging on to for six or seven years, and the second half is new material.

“It’s good for people who listen to alternative, rock, cool inde stuff, country,” said singer Kenny Bauer.

The first single from the album, “Bring You Back,” is starting to get local radio play.

However, fans of the band may not recognize it.

“We’re taking the turn into pop/country,” Bauer said. “It’s time.”

Although some might consider that selling out, Bauer doesn’t see it as a negative.

“It’s a great thing,” he said. “It’s what we all listen to. There’s still going to be hints of Promise Me Scarlet. We’ve just grown and gotten older.”

Wylde-Vine-Polaroid-2The pivot already has cost the band its drummer, but he was quickly replaced. Bauer said the rest of the band, including the new drummer, are all in to go mainstream.

“You don’t have to be the guy living on a farm wearing a cowboy hat,” he said. “Country music is about a guy wearing jeans, drinking beer and writing music with his guitar. There’s plenty of guys with tattoos and (piercings) who enjoy just hanging out and being simple.”

Current influences include Rascal Flatts, Daughtry—“People judge Daughtry, but he’s one of the greatest songwriters out there”—and John Mayer.

One of the highlights to changing genres for Bauer, who writes all the lyrics for the band, is being able to tell stories with the music. He also believes country fans are more loyal.

“I didn’t like the last two Rascal Flatts CDs. Did I buy them? Yes. Country fans fall in love with the band, not an idea.”
