The-Ohio-Weather-Band-PolaroidThe young Alliance-based group has been collecting critical praise for its self-titled debut album, released in early April.

The sound is rootsy rock ’n’ roll, alternately fiery and tender, with evocative lyrics by Corey King, who also sings and plays guitar.

About the band’s songwriting, King, 23, said, “Typically, I’ll write the bare bones on acoustic guitar, then bring the skeleton to the band, and we shape it and give it life.”

As vivid and crisp as the album sounds, it is onstage that the Ohio Weather Band fully hits its stride. At a CD-release show at Musica in Akron, the crowd of fans down front seemed to know the words to every song.

“A core group of them are our good friends, and they’ve helped out by bringing their friends and sharing on social media,” King said.

As for the band’s full-tilt live shows, King said, “The four of us have chemistry from being such good friends, and that energy translates through us, through the music, to the audience. The time goes by so quickly up there, we’re definitely right in the moment but sometimes we make a conscious effort to take it all in.”

King, who has been writing songs since middle school, performed solo acoustically after graduating from Alliance High School in 2009. The Ohio Weather Band was launched as a trio with King, bass player Derek Strata and drummer Pete Childerson. Ray Lumpp, whose keyboards add distinction, joined later.

“Ray has been a great addition to the band,” King said. “He’s been a friend forever but he lived in Seattle for a while. Drums are his first instrument; he literally learned keys for the band.

“Pete, our drummer, is one of the best musicians I’ve ever played with,” he said. “Onstage he’s always on point. He’s the most level-headed person in the band, and literally the backbone.”

Looking to the future, “We’re trying to branch out, definitely. We’re booking a two week summer tour,” King said. “We just played a show in Columbus that went over really well, and we have friends in Pittsburgh. Our ultimate goal is to make this something we can do as long as possible, live off of it and have a good time.”
