Band members Dan Monea (vocals-guitar), Adam Orin (vocals-bass) and Nate Monea (vocals-percussion) won Hard Rock Rising, an international battle of the bands sponsored by the Hard Rock Cafe. Their prize package included an opening slot for Bruce Springsteen, Lady Antebellum and John Fogerty at Hyde Park in London, and a recording contract with Hard Rock Records.
The resulting album, “Cheap Souvenirs,” is filled with infectious, harmony-laden, rhythmic pop-rock. Here, Dan gives a band update.
Q. SINCE YOU’RE ON A BREAK FROM TOURING, HOW ARE YOU GUYS SPENDING THE SUMMER?
A. “Nate and I are doing the acoustic thing on a lot of patios—Jerzee’s, TD’s, Panini’s, On Tap at the Harbor. We just played a show on the beach stage at Clay’s Park. We’re playing at Put -in-Bay for Christmas in July. It makes it so we don’t have to find part-time jobs between tours. Adam plays with anyone that wants to jam, a whole bunch of people. He’s like a true minstrel.”
Q. WHERE ALL DID YOU TOUR AFTER YOUR ALBUM CAME OUT LAST SEPTEMBER?
A. “Everywhere from New York City to Miami to Austin and as far west as St. Paul. We’re trying to get into venues across the country with bigger bands. We did a bunch of shows with Bronze Radio Return. They’re a great band—it was awesome, we had a blast. We pretty much played every other day and now that we’ve been touring in a Winnebago, we’d get halfway to the next show and camp and fish. Getting out in nature inspires us to write music.”
A. “Everywhere, honestly, which was surprising to us. I know we have fans in certain cities and they were all there, but I was surprised by how many people had heard us from Spotify. They show up at shows, singing along and making song requests. That’s a really exciting feeling. Plus, we have been getting radio play in select cities around the country, so people have found out about us from terrestrial radio.”
Q. ANYTHING EXCITING ON THE HORIZON?
A. “We’re looking forward to working on some new music and we’re definitely going back on the road. Plus, we just found out we’re going to be on Rock Boat XV (a music cruise in January 2015) with all kinds of great people— Barenaked Ladies, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Sister Hazel, Will Hogue, Red Wanting Blue.”
