Ready, set, shop!
By Lisa Reicosky
Plenty of upsacle shopping excursions await you throughout Ohio.

Don’t call it a mall.

It’s a place to be. The center of it all. A country of shopping opportunities.

The latest and greatest places to shop in Ohio demand your entire day. Developers have blown the roof off traditional malls and created Main Street-style shopping with stores, restaurants and attractions to keep even the most-seasoned shoppers impressed.

So leave with the concierge your notion of what a mall should look like and hit these Ohio hot spots:

Amish Country

Holmes County

(877) 643-8824

www.visitamishcountry.com

There’s no better time to shop Ohio’s “Amish Country” than the fall, when gorgeous autumn leaves surround the fields where farmers use workhorses to prepare for the next crop.

The area is home to more than 30 furniture stores, thus earning the name “The Furniture Heartland.” It is the country’s largest concentration of solid-wood manufacturers and retailers, featuring authentic, well-built, beautifully crafted furniture by skilled artisans.

Millersburg is home to a historic downtown shopping district that includes eclectic gift shops, a Victorian hotel, and a 12-mile paved trail through one of Ohio’s largest wetlands. Don’t miss the Holmes County Amish Flea Market. It has more than 500 vendors under one roof with more than 100,000 square feet of merchandise.

Berlin boasts more than 60 businesses within two miles, selling items such as cheese, furniture and quilts. Don’t miss the Berlin Village Antique Mall, featuring two floors of antiques and collectibles. Just outside Berlin is Tis the Season, Ohio’s largest year-round Christmas shop.

Crafters and artists are located throughout Holmes County.

Because Holmes County is home to the country’s largest Amish population, visitors get a more-concentrated cultural experience here than in any other Amish community.

People travel from all over to sample the locally produced foods, such as cheese, chocolate, chicken and bologna.

The region also is known for its home-style food. Guests may dine at numerous traditional restaurants, along with locally owned contemporary ones.
