Wine takes a new shape
By Jennifer Mastroianni
Eye-catching bottles, labels are becoming trendy

Remember the days when wine bottles practically were uniform in size and shape, and the only thing distinctive about them was the label?

Those days are gone. Increasingly, packaging is as much an art form as the wine within.

To see the splashiest designs out there, we headed to wine departments at Fishers Foods. Diane Kardohely, wine adviser at the North Canton Fishers, said vintners’ ultra-creative bottles are turning customers’ heads.

“Women, especially, do tend to be attracted to wine because of something different about the label or the bottle,” Kardohely said.

One of the trendiest bottles, she said, is Zeller Schwarze Katz Riesling, which comes in cat-shaped bottles in black, blue, white and red. The refreshing Riesling is just $10.99, and after the wine is enjoyed, many customers use the bottle as a vase. Picture the matte black bottle with a single bright pink gerbera daisy.

One particularly unusual label gives a whole new meaning to spinning the bottle. Francis Ford Coppola Director’s Cut Chardonnay features a thin strip of paper wound twice around the bottle. When spun, images on the label create a moving picture effect.

“We’re seeing things we never imagined,” said Joy Briestensky, wine adviser at Fishers on Fulton Drive NW.

Another especially inventive bottle is Mosen Cleto Spanish red table wine. Coated in a textural sandy substance, it looks as if it came from a prized collection in a dusty cellar.
