My first experience in volunteering in this community occurred within months of my joining the Harter Bank & Trust Co. I was asked to join the Canton Chamber (of Commerce) Jaycees.
It was through that organization that I learned about the many needs of the greater Stark County community.
I would not say that volunteering comes naturally, but rather is a learned behavior, and the extensive encouragement of our community organizations fosters that growth.
Volunteering becomes easy when you stand on the shoulders of the great community leaders that came before you. This is certainly not an exhaustive list, but names that come to mind are Jerry Meek, Jim Powell, Larry Hoover, Tom Schauer, Karen Belden, Nancy Pryce and Carol Savastano.
They, along with countless others, devote hours away from their jobs and families to improve the lives of others. As a result of their commitment, it was always easy to say yes when they came asking.
I also believe that volunteerism is part of the culture of our business community, and businesses have always supported the efforts of their employees’ involvement in these groups.
The greatest treasure of our nonprofit organizations is the volunteer. Ironically, volunteers are becoming one of the biggest challenges for the future.
