Beauty and fashion. Perhaps no two areas of life are more subject to the
whims of trends. Still, even trends can be based on time-tested principles.
“Bringing Home the Birkin: My Life in Hot Pursuit of the World’s Most Coveted Handbag,” by Michael Ionello (hardcover, HarperCollins, 257 pages, 2008, $25.95). The publisher calls it “a globe-trotting story of serendipity, blackmail, fashion, fraud, insatiable greed, bribery, heartbreak, romance, and the world’s most impossible-to-get handbag.” You’ll just call it fun to read. And it’s much easier to buy than the bag itself.
“Gorgeously Green: 8 Simple Steps to an Earth-Friendly Life,” by Sophio Uliano (softcover, Collins, 309 pages, 2008, $16.95). Those who want to incorporate Earth-friendly practices in their daily life can use Uliano as their guru. “We would all do the right thing/things if only we had the resources, the answers, the advice we need,” writes actress Julia Roberts in the foreword. “What can I tell you, but here it is.”
“How Not to Look Old” by Charla Krupp (hardcover, Springboard Press, 2008, 224 pages, $25.99). The author, who has done style segments on the “Today” show, “The View,” “Good Morning America,” and “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” provides a “beauty and style bible that does not tell you to age gracefully and celebrate your wrinkles,” promises the publisher. Instead, “buy this book and glow old gracefully!” reviews actress Christie Brinkley.
“Sephora: The Ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin, and Hair From the Beauty Authority,” by Melissa Schweiger (hardcover, Collins, 2008, 212 pages, $27.95). The author is a former Sephora store beauty editor and she introduces some of the people behind many consumers’ favorite brands. The publisher calls “Sephora” a “smart, sexy” beauty book.
“The Lucky Shopping Manual: Building and Improving Your Wardrobe Piece by Piece,” by Kim France and Andrea Linett (softcover, Gotham Books, 320 pages, 2003, $30) and “Details: Men’s Style Manual,” by Daniel Peres and the editors of Details magazine (softcover, Gotham Books, 272 pages, 2007, $30). No need to feel less than stylish when purchasing clothes and the accessories that go with them. Together these matching books each are, as “Details” suggests in its subtitle, “the ultimate guide for making your clothes work for you.”
