Summer is here and so are fun times on the links, at the lake, in the stadium or just in the backyard at your grill or in your garden. Here are a handful of books to help you get the most out of your favorite hot-weather activity.
“A Disorderly Compendium of Golf: Wisdom, Folly, Rules, Truth, Trivia and More,” by Lorne Rubenstein and Jeff Neuman (softcover, Workman Publishing, 2006, 390 pages, $13.95). “Golf is full of quirky bits and pieces along with stories,” says Arnold Palmer. This book, compiled by authors the publisher calls “two fanatical lovers of the game,” includes lists, records, anecdotes, quotes, instruction, humor and “mesmerizing minutiae.”
“Baseball: 365 Days,” by Joseph Wallace (hardcover, Abrams Books, 2008, 744 pages, $29.95). Photos in this book — one a day for the year, if you want to dole them out — focus on superstars since the 1970s. Some photos are exciting. Others are funny. A few are moving. Text accompanying them is informative and touching, evoking memories with images taken from the archives of Major League Baseball.
“Guide to Ohio Vegetable Gardening,” by James A. Fizzell (softcover, Cool Springs Press, 2007, 288 pages, $12.95). A respected garden writer offers advice that is helpful to both beginning and expert gardener — information on planning, selecting and planting the Buckeye State’s top edible plants.
“Weber’s Real Grilling,” by Jamie Purviance (softcover, Sunset Books, 2000, 304 pages, $24.99). More than 200 original recipes for the grill, each with a color photograph, are provided under the name of one of America’s most well-known grill companies. “Let’s get real,” the Weber people encourage. “Grilling should be simple and fun.”
“The Fishing Handbook: An Illustrated Guide for Anglers,” by Rob Beattie (hardcover, Sellers Publishing, 2007, 128 pages, $16.95). Although you’ll want to read it cover to cover at first sitting, “this book has been designed for dipping,” its author says. It’s for “take-along or read-at home,” explains the publisher, describing it as a “practical yet handsome package” — a nostalgic manual filled with nuggets of fishing wisdom, delightful anecdotes and wily tips.
