“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” by Rebecca Skloot (hardcover, Crown Publishers, 2010, 369 pages, $26). Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer, yet her cells — taken without her knowledge — became some of the most important tools in medicine. The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they still are alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years.

American journalist Julia Jarmond researches the brutal 1942 Nazi roundup in Paris and stumbles upon a connection between her family and one of the victims, which compels Julia to learn more about the girl's life.
