These books are among the top picks this month

“Bossypants,” by Tina Fey (hardcover, Regan Arthur Books, 2011, 288 pages, $26.99). Actress Tina Fey recounts her life, sharing how she managed to fulfill her dream of becoming a comedian on television. She also discusses her childhood, marriage, career, and views on beauty, politics, motherhood and relationships.

 

“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” by Rebecca Skloot (hardcover, Crown Publishers, 2010, 369 pages, $26). Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer, yet her cells — taken without her knowledge — became some of the most important tools in medicine. The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they still are alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years.

 

“Game of Thrones,” by George R.R. Martin (paperback, Bantam, 2011, 720 pages, $17). Lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, and all the forces of good and evil prepare for trouble in the land of Winterfell, where summers can last for decades and winters a lifetime.

 

“The Help,” by Kathryn Stockett (hardcover, Putnam, 2009, 464 pages, $24.95). In Jackson, Miss., in 1962, there are lines that are not crossed. With the civil rights movement exploding all around them, three women start a movement of their own, forever changing a town and the way women — black and white, mothers and daughters — view one another.

 

“Sarah’s Key,” by Tatiana de Rosnay (paperback, St. Martin’s Griffin, 2008, 320 pages, $13.99). American journalist Julia Jarmond researches the brutal 1942 Nazi roundup in Paris and stumbles upon a connection between her family and one of the victims, which compels Julia to learn more about the girl's life.
